Yesterday my four year old sun finally destroyed my wife's aged titanium G4 powerbook by basically breaking off the LCD display. Now the machine is still fully functional, except that it can not be carried around anymore, due to the display literally hanging only by a thread.

So I am trying to turn the computer formerly known as a laptop into a desktop via an external 21" Monitor I have lying around.

How do you switch off the LCD screen and operate the laptop in closed state with external keyboard and external monitor only became the goal of 24 hour extensive googling.

I finally found what I was looking for here. The solution to my problem was:

  • hooking up the power supply
  • connecting the external monitor and USB keyboard
  • pressing Command+F2 on the laptop
  • close lid

Now this old laptop has not to be put out to pasture, but can serve a little longer as a desktop - that is until I can afford to get a nice G5.
